Reviews about the book
I'm deeply moved by this story, and it would be an honour to appear in it. You have an amazing ear for dialogue Kim, the recounting of Harry's 1st leave (Chapter 16) I had to stop reading, It was like I was there with them, at the table and totally understand his wonder at seeing his child stand before him in the morning. It's a lovely book, and should make quite an epic, not just because it of it's wartime scope and detail but because it tells a very human story of ordinary men making extraordinary sacrifices.![]()

The Greater Share of Honour is a terrific piece of work - superbly researched, gripping and an extraordinary story. Kim James brilliantly captures the decency and courage of seven men from utterly different backgrounds.![]()

A great read; you have that innate talent of drawing the reader into the book and feeling engulfed in the situation… The way you describe the demolition of the bridge and the dialogue between the men rings absolutely true. I can't fault it. Congratulations.![]()
Major A. C. of the Corps of Royal Engineers. (Personal communication)
I feel you have shown remarkable consistency and fidelity in not turning your lead characters into standard fictional fodder. They are much more interesting than that. No one could doubt that these, once, were real men with real lives, who were condemned to suffer real and avoidable deaths… they do appear to be true heroes of their era. In this, as in much else, you have truly honoured them and their sacrifice ![]()

This book reminds us that behind all the accounts of great events in history are thousands of ordinary men and women risking everything - not for honour and glory, but because it is the right thing to do..![]()

For the men whose story this is, Kim James has produced a moving tribute. If it were just a work of fiction, it would be a remarkable story. That it is true seems almost incredible. .![]()

This book, even as a novel, is what military history should be, rich in detail, evocative and telling a story that needs to be told in a way that makes it accessible to anyone. Definitely recommended.![]()
